Dental Professional Volunteers

Occasionally, children’s dental needs are more extensive than what we are able to treat on the vans. In those cases, we rely on a generous network of private dentists in the community who pledge to treat one to four patients a year, pro bono.

We are currently recruiting volunteer dentists to treat complex care referrals from our program at no cost to patients. Here is how our volunteer dental program works:

• All of the referred patients have received thorough examinations on the St. David’s Dental vans, including x-rays and a clinical exam.
• Dr. Patrice Coons, Clinical Director, approves all referrals and helps identify the appropriate dentist or specialist to perform procedures, such as:
  • Complex extractions and/or biopsies
  • Endodontic treatment
  • Crowns
  • Partials
  • Periodontal treatment
  • Special cases of pediatric dentistry
    Our Social Worker will coordinate the referral appointment with your front office staff and accompany the patient to their first visit.

Student Volunteers

Students (bachelor and graduate level) are welcome to volunteer with our Dental Program. We supervise one student per semester--space is limited and we are currently at capacity until spring of 2012. Volunteer opportunities include administrative and clinical duties. We prefer a minimum commitment of 3 months (1 day a week) of volunteerism.
