1998 The St. David's Dental Program begins as the Central Texas Children's Dental Health Collaborative, a school-based screening and sealant initiative with one part-time dentist and an assistant.
2000 First mobile dental van (Theo 1) is added through a loan agreement with the City of Austin. Foundation clinicians perform restorative care on the dental van and City hygenists apply sealants in the schools.
2002
Theo 2 is purchased through a grant from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
A second dentist and assistant are hired.
2004
A third mobile dental van is added through a loan agreement with the Department of State Health Services. The van is shared with the City of Austin. Due to recurring mechanical failure and high costs of maintenance, the van is taken out of service at the end of the 2004-05 school year.
2006
April: The Foundation purchases Theo 3 to replace the exhausted state-loaned van. This new van will continue to be shared with the City.
2007 January: Theo 4 and Theo 5 went into operation. Theo 4 is funded by the Topfer Family Foundation, the Still Water Foundation, and St. David's Community Health Foundation Leadership. Theo 5 is funded by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. The program is now operating 4.5 vans staffed by 5 full-time dentists, 5 dental assistants, 2 van assistants, and sealant clinic team (one dental hygienist, and one dental assistant.) The vans and sealant clinic will visit schools in at least three counties to serve low-income children. During school breaks and summers, the program provides care to children and adults through partnerships with community-based safety net agencies.
