As the local economy continues to break records on a number of measures, Austin’s leadership is working to address the issue of affordability for all who call Austin home.  Austin Mayor Steve Adler has highlighted this issue, noting that increasing numbers of Austinites are struggling with affordability in our community. He has urged both the public and private sectors to make it a priority to seek ways to assure that everyone in the community can afford to live and thrive in our city.

From the philanthropic sector, efforts are underway to help address this need. St. David’s Foundation, among the largest in central Texas in making healthcare-related grants, and one that provides grants with the goal of “making Austin the healthiest community in the world” has announced today that it is making over $25 million in grants to area nonprofits.

“Affordability is a significant challenge for Austin, and St. David’s Foundation is stepping up to help.  For Austinites who rely on a safety net clinic, and for needy Austinites seeking mental health services, these grants go a long way toward helping to provide essential healthcare services.  St. David’s Foundation is a key partner in meeting our community’s affordability challenge, and I’d like to personally express my gratitude and appreciation,” said Steve Adler, Mayor of Austin.

With total giving for 2016 projected to be around $75 million, St. David’s Foundation grants announced today will encompass several priority areas of giving for the locally based philanthropy.

Over $11 million will go to safety net clinics that provide primary care and preventive care for low-income families.  Additional grants will provide mental health services for children and adults, and to support future healthcare professionals with scholarships and other assistance in pursuing their careers.  Further investments are made to encourage healthy lifestyles, and to provide dental care for vulnerable members of the community.

“Our deepest appreciation goes to the Mayor for his dedication to making Austin a more affordable and welcoming community for all,” said Earl Maxwell, CEO of St. David’s Foundation. He continued, “We are proud to make this financial investment in our nonprofit partners, who are doing a wonderful job of providing essential healthcare related services for our community.”

The announcement event took place today at Homestead Oaks, a Foundation Communities Affordable Housing Community. Foundation Communities is a grant partner of St. David’s Foundation and today received a $1.07 million grant from the Foundation.
